Tropical ferns and flowers grow above and around the clear waters of the many jungle pools in the area, called cenotes after the ancient Mayan word for them. These pools are beautiful for swimming and exploring. Some extend into caves. The streams in Yucatan flow mostly underground, through limestone. Their waters trickle through the jungle pools, bringing a constant supply of fresh, clear water.
You can jump from a high wooden platform into a deep pool of water inside a cave, then climb back up a wooden stairway to the cave entrance at the top. At another cave, you can climb down a hanging ladder into the deep pool of water inside the cave.
